Custom Hydrofoil Moth

Design Concept

Mark Hughes of Element Naval Architecture, wanted to build a custom hydrofoil moth over his Christmas vacation. However to keep it a holiday, he wanted to minimise the nasties of amateur boat building, such as dust, laminating, fairing, measuring and  "the project that never ends". Despite this, it still needed to be light enough to perform competitively (10kg hull) and eye catching.

Construction

Mark decided on a custom DuFLEX component pack supplied by ATL. The pack included everything required to build the hull, including two CNC-routed carbon foam panels and a CNC-routed MDF temporary female jig. The female jig allowed the hull to be assembled very quickly - just drop the panels in, laminate internal taping and fit frames, all in one hit. The hull was dimensionally stable by the end of the first day.

The DuFLEX panels, cored with AIREX C70.75 structural foam,  were supplied by ATL with a lightweight carbon double bias on each side and were CNC-routed into a component pack.
